What an InBody Scan Shows That a Scale Cannot
A scale gives you one number. It cannot tell you whether the five pounds you lost came from fat, muscle or water, and that difference is the whole story. An InBody scan breaks your weight into its parts so you can see what is actually changing.
Our clinic uses the InBody 770, a professional body composition analyzer made by InBody and used by clinics, universities and research teams. It uses direct segmental multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance, known as DSM-BIA, through eight tactile electrodes, including thumb electrodes. It takes 30 impedance measurements at six frequencies from 1 kHz to 1,000 kHz across your arms, legs and trunk, so your results are reported for each segment of your body instead of one overall estimate.
Your results include skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass and percent body fat, total body water and how it is distributed, lean mass for each arm, each leg and your trunk, visceral fat area, phase angle and basal metabolic rate. You get the printed result sheet the same day.
The point is not to chase a perfect number. It is to know your starting point and to see, in black and white, whether your training, nutrition and sleep are building the body you are working toward. Most people are surprised by at least one number on their first sheet, and that surprise is usually where the useful conversation starts.
About a Minute on the Analyzer
You stand barefoot on the platform, hold the hand electrodes and stay still for roughly 60 seconds. There is nothing to feel, and the whole visit is short.
Measured Segment by Segment
Eight contact points and six frequencies let the InBody 770 report your right arm, left arm, trunk, right leg and left leg separately, which makes side to side differences easy to spot.
Muscle, Fat and Body Water
See skeletal muscle, body fat, visceral fat area and total body water with its extracellular ratio, the measurements that matter when you are working to change your body composition.
A Result Sheet You Keep
Every scan ends with a printed result sheet. Scan again under the same conditions and your history shows the trend, which is where the real value is.
What Your InBody Scan Records
Every InBody scan on our InBody 770 records the measurements below. Your printed result sheet shows each one against a typical range, and your history builds every time you rescan under the same conditions.
Body Fat Percentage
The share of your weight that is fat, shown beside your BMI so the number has real context.
Skeletal Muscle Mass
The trainable muscle attached to your bones, the number that tells you whether training and nutrition are working.
Body Fat Mass
Pounds of fat, tracked separately from muscle, so you know what a change on the scale actually was.
Segmental Lean Analysis
Muscle in your right arm, left arm, trunk, right leg and left leg, compared side to side.
Segmental Water Distribution
The extracellular water ratio for each arm, each leg and your trunk, showing how water is spread through your body.
Visceral Fat Area
An estimate of the fat stored around your organs, charted by age so you can watch it move over time.
Total Body Water
Your body water split into intracellular and extracellular water, the water inside and outside your cells.
ECW/TBW Ratio
How your overall body water is balanced, one of the key readings in the body water analysis.
Dry Lean Mass
The protein and minerals in your body, the building material for muscle and bone.
Phase Angle
A reading of how your cells respond to the signal, often used as a general marker of cell health.
Basal Metabolic Rate
The estimated calories you burn at complete rest, calculated from your lean body mass.
Body Composition History
Your weight, muscle, body fat and water balance from past scans, graphed side by side.
How an InBody Scan Works at Aervita
Book Online or Call
Pick a time that works for you. The scan does not require the Initial Health Assessment, a referral or a membership, so anyone can book one.
Show Up Prepared
Come at least three hours after a meal, use the restroom first and skip the workout, sauna or hot shower beforehand. The prep checklist below covers the rest.
Step On for About a Minute
Our team enters your height, age and sex, then you stand on the InBody 770 barefoot and hold the handles while it measures. You will not feel the signal.
Leave With Your Numbers
You take home your printed result sheet. If you want your numbers interpreted and a plan built around them, book the Initial Health Assessment.
HONEST TALK
What an InBody Scan Can and Cannot Tell You
An InBody scan uses bioelectrical impedance analysis, or BIA. A very small electrical signal you will not feel passes through your body. Muscle holds a lot of water and fat holds very little, so the resistance that signal meets is used to calculate your body composition. It is fast, it involves no radiation, and it is easy to repeat, which is exactly what you want for tracking.
It is also sensitive to hydration. A big meal, a hard workout, a sauna session or a night of drinking can shift the numbers, which is why preparation and consistent timing matter more than any single reading. Compare your results to your own earlier scans taken the same way, not to someone else’s.
The scan measures body composition. It is not a diagnostic test, and it does not replace an examination, lab work or medical care. If you want your results interpreted in the context of your health history, that is what our Initial Health Assessment is for.

InBody Scan Questions, Answered
It is a body composition test. You stand barefoot on the InBody 770 and hold its hand electrodes while it sends a small electrical signal through your body at several frequencies. The resistance that signal meets is used to calculate how much of your weight is muscle, fat, water and minerals, reported for each arm, each leg and your trunk. The measurement itself takes about a minute.
A scan is $74 and includes your printed result sheet. There is no package or membership required. If you want a clinician to interpret your results and build a plan with you, book the $84 Initial Health Assessment, which is the starting point for every consultation at Aervita.
No. Anyone can book a scan without an assessment, referral or membership. Consultations are different. If you want your results reviewed and a plan built around them, we ask you to book the Initial Health Assessment first, so we can take a proper history and give advice that actually fits you.
Your result sheet labels each measurement, and our team can show you where each number sits on the page. A clinical interpretation of your results, with advice and a plan, is a consultation. Consultations at Aervita begin with the $84 Initial Health Assessment, so we have your full history before we make recommendations.
The InBody 770 measures each segment of your body at six frequencies instead of relying on one overall reading. Like every BIA device, though, it is sensitive to hydration, food and recent exercise. The most reliable way to use it is to scan under the same conditions each time and watch the trend across several InBody scans rather than reading too much into one.
Wear light, comfortable clothing. You will remove your shoes and socks, because your bare hands and feet need to touch the electrodes, and we ask you to take off watches, heavy jewelry and anything metal you can easily remove. Skip lotion on your hands and feet that day so the electrodes make good contact.
People with a pacemaker, defibrillator or other implanted electronic medical device should not be tested on the InBody 770, as the manufacturer’s manual states. InBody also does not recommend testing during pregnancy, because the extra body water skews the numbers. For everyone else, the signal is very low level and most people do not feel it at all.
Many people rescan every four to eight weeks, which is long enough to see real change in muscle and fat without chasing day to day water swings. If you are in a structured program, your plan may set specific checkpoints. Whatever the interval, keep it consistent: same time of day, same preparation, same analyzer.
Visceral fat is the fat stored around your internal organs, as opposed to the fat just under your skin. Higher visceral fat is associated with cardiometabolic risk, which is why it is one of the numbers we watch in our cardiometabolic program. Your scan reports your visceral fat area so you can see whether it is moving in the right direction.
Phase angle comes from how your cells respond to the electrical signal, and it is often used as a general marker of cell health and body cell mass. Higher values are typical of people with more muscle and good hydration. It is most useful as a trend over time rather than as a standalone verdict.
ECW/TBW is the ratio of extracellular water, the water outside your cells, to your total body water. It shows how your body water is balanced. A ratio outside the typical range can reflect things like swelling or recent injury, but it is not a diagnosis on its own, which is why we review it in context during an Initial Health Assessment.
A DEXA scan uses low dose X-rays and is often used as a reference method in research. InBody uses bioelectrical impedance, involves no radiation and takes about a minute, which makes it easy to repeat. For tracking your own progress, scanning consistently under the same conditions matters more than which method you choose.
Many people on GLP-1 medications want to know whether they are losing fat or muscle, and an InBody test is a simple way to see it. Repeat scans show how your skeletal muscle and body fat change as your weight comes down. We do not prescribe or manage those medications, so share your results with the provider who does.
Home scales that estimate body fat usually send a signal from foot to foot, so they mostly measure your legs and estimate the rest. The InBody 770 uses hand and foot electrodes and measures your arms, legs and trunk separately at multiple frequencies. Home devices also differ in how they calculate results, so treat numbers from different devices as separate trends rather than comparing them directly.
Skeletal muscle mass is the muscle attached to your bones, the muscle you can train and build. It is one of the most useful numbers on the result sheet because it tends to drop quietly with age, inactivity and aggressive dieting. Watching it over time tells you whether your training and nutrition are protecting the muscle you have.
Segmental lean analysis shows the lean mass in each arm, each leg and your trunk, and compares it with what is typical for your height. It can reveal an imbalance between sides, such as after an injury, a surgery or years of favoring one leg, and it helps you see where a training program is adding muscle.
Basal metabolic rate, or BMR, is an estimate of the calories your body uses at complete rest. On the InBody 770 it is calculated from your lean body mass, so building muscle tends to raise it. It is a helpful starting point for nutrition planning, though your actual daily needs also depend on how active you are.
The analyzer itself needs about a minute. Allow a little extra time to enter your height, age and sex, take off your shoes and socks, and stand for a few minutes before testing, so the whole visit is brief.

How to Prepare for Your InBody Scan
A little preparation makes your results more consistent from one visit to the next. These guidelines follow InBody’s own testing recommendations.
- Wait at least three hours after a meal before your scan.
- Use the restroom right before you step on.
- Skip exercise, the sauna and hot showers before your scan that day.
- Drink normally the day before, but avoid gulping water or caffeine right before.
- Remove shoes, socks, watches and heavy jewelry.
- Skip lotion on your hands and feet.
- Stand for about five minutes before testing so your body water settles.
- For follow up scans, book the same time of day and repeat the same routine.
If you are menstruating, let us know. Water retention can shift results slightly, which matters when you compare one InBody scan to the next.
